What is peritoneal carcinomatosis?
Peritoneal carcinomatosis is a complex presentation of advanced abdominal cancers, in which the cancer has spread throughout the abdominal cavity. Peritoneal carcinomatosis can originate from cancers of the colon, stomach, appendix, ovary, fallopian tube, and uterus, as well as primary peritoneal and peritoneal mesothelioma.

What is cytoreductive surgery?
Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) is the physical removal of tumor by surgery. The goal of the surgery is to remove as much tumor as possible. Evidence exists that removing all visible tumor offers the best possibility for long-term survival.

What is HIPEC?
HIPEC stands for hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy and is used to treat peritoneal carcinomatosis. After all tumors are surgically removed from the abdominal cavity, heated chemotherapy is circulated throughout the abdomen to kill any residual microscopic cancer cells.

Why is supporting HIPEC research important?
HIPEC is still considered a relatively new treatment and many physicians remain unfamiliar with the treatment itself and which patients are considered HIPEC candidates. This ultimately leads to inappropriate treatments and delays in care. In many cancers, cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC has been shown to be more effective than surgery alone or standard systemic chemotherapy. For many patients, HIPEC is their only chance at long-term survival. It is our mission to advance this life-saving procedure and educate other providers to increase early referrals and improve survival.
